Friends locked to a bulldozer at Coal River Mountain. They’ve been living there for the past few years working with local residents to prevent the mountain from being blown to bits. Massey Coal has begun blasting, and if the company is allowed to continue, will take the entire top of the mountain off.
These guys are heroes - Jim Hansen, the nation’s top climatologist, wrote a letter of support for them.
A few years ago when Matt and Larry toured me around Coal River Valley, I could tell how much they loved the place and how much the community mattered to them. It was life and death: Coal River Valley without a Coal River Mountain is nothing. They were prepared for this fight. They’d already battled against the sludge dam holding back toxic mountain guts 30 yards in front of Marsh Fork Elementary school and the black water that comes out of their taps.
